Add Shortcodes to Your Posts with WooThemes the Easy Way

Would you like to add more features to your blog posts without having to hand code them in HTML? All WordPress themes from WooThemes include shortcodes to make it easier for you to add quotes, buttons, download links and more to your blog posts. The only problem is, you’ll still have to remember all of the codes to add the shortcode features to your posts.

That’s all now changed as WooThemes has now incorporated a great visual shortcode generator into their theme framework. This was first created as a third party WordPress plugin by developer Rico Gundermann, but now it’s been baked into the latest WooFramework. All you’ll have to do is update your theme and you’ll be ready to start adding features from shortcodes in two clicks. Here’s how to do it.

Add Shortcodes the Easy Way

First, make sure your site is running a WooTheme with the latest version of the WooFramework. You can check this from the Update Framework button under your theme settings in your WordPress dashboard. If it’s out of date, click Update and seconds later, you’ll have the latest features.

Now, head over to your post editor to start writing a new post. You’ll notice a new Woo button on the visual editor toolbar. This opens a menu with options for all the different shortcodes you can use to add buttons, icons, multiple columns in your text, quotes, social media buttons, and more. Select the one you want to get started.

A box will now open with the options for that shortcode. Enter any text that will be included, choose your styles, and preview the whole thing on the right. Click Insert when you’re finished, and you’ll be able to see the actually shortcode used along with any modifications. Even if you prefer to simply enter raw code, this is a great way to discover your theme’s shortcode features.

You’ll likely find features you didn’t know your theme had. Below is a preview of the WooThemes tabbed box with a quote inside, all made with shortcodes on my secondary, WooThemes powered site http://maybring.com/.

Want to try out the Shortcode Generator without having a WooTheme installed on your site? Just head over to the WooThemes Playground where you can try out all of the WooThemes features without having to purchase and install a new theme on your site. Conclusion

Shortcodes aren’t unique to WooThemes; in fact, most professional WordPress themes include them nowadays. ElegantThemes have actually included shortcode buttons in the post editor for a while now. The only problem is, they end up making the editor too wide for small screens, and there’s no easy way to remove the buttons from the editor. WooTheme’s integration just works better than any other I’ve tried previously, and having everything in a menu makes it very easy to use. Plus, since the original plugin is opensource, hopefully other developers can use it to add great shortcode integration for their themes as well!

Does your favorite WordPress theme include shortcodes, and do you find yourself using them often?

Upgrade Your Blog to WordPress 3.0

The latest and greatest version of WordPress, the software that powers Techinch and many other blogs and websites around the ‘net, was just released.  WordPress 3.0 brings some major new features and style to the platform, and I’m excited to say that Techinch.com was updated to the final release version only minutes after it was released.  The upgrade went smoothly, and only took a couple minutes.  If you’d like to upgrade your site, here’s how to do it.

Backup Before you Mess Up

If you’re ready to upgrade your blog, login to your WordPress dashboard.  You should always make sure you have a current backup of your blog’s content just in case something goes wrong, so scroll down to the Tools menu on the left side of the Dashboard and select Export.

image

Click the Download Export File button at the bottom, and save the XML file to a safe location on your computer.  Now if something goes wrong you can reinstall WordPress and import your posts, comments, pages, and more, just like they were before you upgraded.

Upgrade your Blog in minutes

Now you’re ready to get WordPress 3.0 running on your site.  You may see a yellow banner on the top of your site advising you to upgrade; click the Please update now to get started.

Otherwise, scroll down to the Tools section again, and click Upgrade.

sshot-2010-06-17-[23-40-02] Now make the leap … click the Upgrade Automatically to have WordPress download and install the upgrade automatically.  Notice the warning to backup your files; if you didn’t do this already, go do it now just in case!

sshot-2010-06-17-[23-40-43] WordPress will show you its progress as it installs the new version.  After a few moments, you should see the final message stating that WordPress upgraded successfully.

image Click the Dashboard link in the menu, and you’ll now see the new Dashboard theme.  Welcome to WordPress 3.0!  You can even see the new Menus link under Appearance, where you can now edit your menus easily directly from WordPress.

image Many themes currently don’t support the new Menus, so watch your theme developer’s site for news about updates.  Until then, though, you can still use WordPress as normal, and take advantage of all it’s other features.  Or, you could try out the new Twenty Ten theme, as it is really nice!

But wait … what’s actually new in WordPress 3.0?

Hey, glad you asked … no reason to upgrade your blog for no reason!  Check out the blog post announcing WordPress 3.0’s launch for more information, or just kill a few minutes watching this video which sums up the major new features nicely.

Latest articles from Digital Inspiration

In between all of my new writing at How-to Geek, I have still been writing some articles for Digital Inspiration.  I recently reviewed Manymoon, an exciting project management system that is fully integrated with Google Apps.  It works both with the free standard Google accounts, as well as pro Google Apps accounts.  Find out more here:  Manymoon, an Online Project Management Software for Google Users

Then, I personally started out blogging at WordPress.com, but then recently moved to a self-hosted WordPress.org install with MochaHost.  The great thing is, I was able to move all of my old content to this site, and also redirect all of the traffic from my old theoldestof8.wordpress.com domain directly here to www.techinch.com.  Check out the article I contributed to at Digital Inspiration for exactly how to do this: How to Migrate your Blog from WordPress.com to a Personal Domain

The future of WordPress … today!

WordPress is the software that powers this and millions of other blogs and websites today.  It makes setting up and running a blog simple and quick, and is highly extendable through a wealth of plugins and themes.  WordPress 2.9 was released in December, and discussion has already been started about the features and development of WordPress 3.0 which is due this year.  One of the most exciting discussions about the 3.0 release, in my opinion, is the plan to introduce a new default theme.  The famous blue and white Kubrick theme has been the default theme in WordPress since 2005, and powers many blogs even today.

Today, the new WordPress Foundation was launched, and it is powered by the development version of WordPress 3.0 and … the new 2010 theme!  It is exciting to see a preview of the theme in the wild!  The theme is monochrome unlike the bright blue Kubrick, but appears to be more malleable and configurable the former default theme.  It is clean and gives full attention to the body text, and looks fairly similar to the many framework themes that have become popular in recent years.  So if you want a glimpse of the next default theme, head over to http://wordpressfoundation.org/.  And while you’re there, check out the opensource projects under the WordPress umbrella, and subscribe to their blog to keep up with the future of WordPress.

Now I can’t wait to see WordPress 3.0 and the 2010 theme released to the public!

Welcome to Techinch.com!

Hi and welcome to Techinch.com!  This my newest technology blog, and basically I am moving the content from my old WordPress.com blog, theoldestof8.wordpress.com, to a self-hosted WordPress solution.  You can check out our new About page for more information, but here is a quick rundown.  This site is, of course, powered by the excellent WordPress software.  After searching extensively, I ended up going with Mochahost as the host for this site.  The hosting has been good so far, offer a wide range of hosting services, and their support has been both quick and excellent.  They offer both Windows and Linux hosting, and you can always switch if your needs change.  Techinch is using a theme from ElegantThemes, which I highly recommend.  Their themes are beautiful, price is unbeatable, and their support forums are very helpful.

I hope to post more articles about my experiences setting up this site and the technologies I’m using with it, so check back soon for more.  By the way, don’t forget to subscribe to our RSS and Twitter (main and twitterfeed-powered RSS only) feeds!  And as always, the majority of my writing appears on Digital Inspiration; I’ll cross-post links to my articles here and at Twitter.

Techinch | Making tech simpler, inch by inch!  That’s our motto; let us know how we can do that better!
