eBooks are the latest buzz in the tech industry. From Amazon’s Kindle to the tablet that Apple is expected to unveil next week, it seems like the 2010’s will do for books what the 2000’s did for music with mp3s. eBooks are hardly a new phenomenon however. Microsoft has been releasing books in a variety of digital formats for many years. Best of all, they regularly offer select ones for free download. Techinch recently featured several of these books, and today Microsoft Press announced one new free eBook and mentioned another they have offered for several months:
First Look Microsoft Office 2010
The latest version of Microsoft Office is still in beta, but it’s never too soon to learn about the new version. In fact, right now might be the ideal time to learn the new features so you can use it easily once it is released. This book gives a nice overview of the new features in Office 2010. Tips and tricks for every application in the Office suite are presented in this book, but the majority of the book covers the most popular applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. It also covers the ribbon interface, so if you are still using Office 2003 or older you can quickly get used to the changes introduced in Office 2007

What You Can Do Before You Call Tech Support
This book is tiny compared to the other, but could be even more useful. What You Can Do Before You Call Tech Support is a simple, 12 page book from the author of the 1,760 page Windows 7 Resource Kit. He presents a simple strategy to track down problems in your computer when it’s not acting right. Windows 7has many new troubleshooting tools built, and it shows how to use them to your advantage. Although this is not a full length book, it still offers many good tips for troubleshooting your computer. The book is designed around the new troubleshooting features in Windows 7, but it also offers many tips that are applicable for any computer, whether it’s running any version of Windows, Mac OS, or Linux. Even if you already know the tips in this short book it can still be a good refresher and checklist of things to check when something goes wrong. Download it now for free in PDF or XPS format.
